It is rare in my community that we receive encouragement to seek out the help we need. It is rare for the people who help us to be racially competent, educationally supportive, and unique in their therapeutic style. Ms. LaTanya Tolan is all of these things and more. I am a twenty-two-year-old graduate student currently attending school in the field of Marriage and Family Therapy. One of my very first assignments from my professor was to search for a therapist and schedule at least 10- sessions. Immediately after receiving this assignment, I was anxious that I would never find a therapist that I would feel comfortable confiding in. A few days after, I found a website listing therapists in my surrounding community. I was immediately drawn to Ms. LaTanya’s profile. Her profile was bright, eye catching, and individualized. Truthfully, this is exactly how I view her therapeutic style as well. Each of our sessions are helpful and I walk out with less and less of the baggage I came in with. Although the things I share are heavy and difficult to handle, I always feel excited for our next sessions. Her style is very individualized and culturally based as well. I always feel listened to, and like I am pouring my feelings out into a garden that is continuously helping me grow. As a student seeking a career in this very field, it has been a blessing to connect with someone like her. I not only learn how to grow through my own pain, but I also learn inspiring techniques and methods to potentially utilize for future clients. I am excited to meet the woman I am growing into with the help of Ms. LaTanya Tolan’s expertise.
